Academic & General Training

Two test versions – one recognised certificate

IELTS Academic is aimed at prospective students and professionals who wish to register academically or professionally. IELTS General Training is suitable for training, work and migration (including Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom). Both versions are assessed on the IELTS band scale from 1 to 9.

Test structure & duration

Four sections

Listening · 30 min.

40 questions on four listening passages from everyday life and study – the same for Academic and General.

Reading · 60 min.

40 questions; Academic with academic texts, General with everyday and work-related texts.

Writing · 60 min.

Two tasks: Academic (graph + essay) or General (letter + essay).

Speaking · 11–14 min.

A personal interview with a certified examiner – which may take place on a separate date.

Important information

Before registering

Registration is handled exclusively via the British Council – direct booking through Eloquia is not possible
When booking, select Frankfurt as the test location and the appropriate version (Academic or General Training)
Identification: a valid passport is required on both the registration and test day
Early registration is recommended, as dates are in high demand
Rebooking and cancellations are subject to the British Council's terms
